Foreign Minister calls for consensus on supporting stability

Cairo - The UAE Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has stressed the importance of the Arab Ministerial Committee meeting currently taking place in Cairo to discuss the situation in Iraq and has expressed the hope that the meeting would reach a consensus on ways to support the integrity of, and stability in, Iraq.

Sheikh Abdullah made his statement here last night at the end of the consultative meeting of Arab foreign ministers, which was also attended by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul. The meeting was part of a working dinner hosted by Egyptian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Abul Ghait.

The UAE Foreign Minister said that he hoped the Ministerial Committee meeting would reach a consensus on supporting the integrity of and stability in Iraq, so as to help Iraq to re-assume its proper place in the region.

He added, however, that "Although Iraq is a major issue now, it does not alter the fact that the Palestinian issue is the central, core, issue." Commenting on the dangers of Iran's nuclear programme, Sheikh Abdullah said the Arab League had already adopted its policy on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.

"This includes the nuclear programmes of Iran and Israel. It also includes any other approach that would lead to instability in the region," he said. "We hope Iran will be committed to a transparent approach, not just for the sake of Arab countries but for the sake of the entire world," he added.

In a comment on the recent Saudi-Iranian summit in Riyadh, Sheikh Abdullah noted that there was always full co-ordination on all issues between UAE, Saudi Arabia and other countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
