Former Jordanian Minister of Information Laila Sharaf has hailed the support accorded to women issues by the President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, particularly his relentless efforts to avail all the requirements needed by women to effectively participate in the development of their society. Mrs. Sharaf, who is leading her country's delegation to Arab Women Media Forum which will open in the capital on Saturday , also commended the pioneering role of H.H Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the President's wife and Chairwomen of the UAE General Women's Union, in elevating women status in the UAE and Arab world.

Mrs. Sharaf expressed gratitude to HH Sheikha Fatima for her commendable efforts to host the Arab Women Day in Abu Dhabi, which will be observed on Friday 31 January. Speaking to Al Mar'a Al Youm (Women Today) Magazine, Sharaf underlined the importance of the women forum , saying that its significance stems from the fact that it would seek to correct the image of Arab women as portrayed by the media. Asked about the recent decision by HH President Sheikh Zayed to grant nationality to children of UAE women who married to Arabs and other foriegners , Sharaf described the decision as "civilised and progressive". "President Sheikh Zayed is a sage and visionary leader and we hope this would be emulated by other leaders" It is a move that should be aggressively promoted in other Arab countries because women who are married to their non-compatriots often suffer in many respects when they are divorced or widowed, she said.(The Emirates News AGency, WAM)
