A delegation of former US ambassadors yesterday praised President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his magnanimous offer to fund the reconstruction of Jenin refugee camp. +I have known President H. H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan very closely. He is a man of great stature and admirable qualities. + said Andrew Kilgore, head of the seven-member delegation which is currently visiting Jenin refugees camp.

The camp is being reconstructed by the UAE Red Crescent Society on the orders of President Sheikh Zayed. Kilgore who served as US ambassador to Qatar said in remarks shortly after visiting camp that he was amazed by the project, adding that he was not totally surprised by this massive project, given the great magnanimity for which Sheikh Zayed is well-known.

For his part ambassador Edward Bick, a former US ambassador to Iraq and Morocco said he was pleased to get a first-hand view of an important project that restored hope to the Palestinian people. He added that the delegation comprising ambassadors who served in the Arab world was shocked by the appalling conditions under which the Palestinian people had been subjected. Edward noted that his delegation would reflect the real the situation on the ground to the American people.

The visit of the delegation also provided its members to see the separation wall , currently being erected by Israel. Speaking about the importance of the RCS reconstruction project, Hassan Hamdan, a resident of the Jenin refugees camp said the project had restored hope to thousands of Palestinians whose dwellings were destroyed by Israel. +As I see my house being rebuilt, I cannot help but pay tribute to this great Arab leader who has restored hope to many Palestinians. We are expecting a baby and will be named Zayed, as a tribute to Sheikh Zayed+ Hamdan told the delegation.

The Jenin reconstruction project is a model of projects that are badly needed by the Palestinian people if their current suffering is to be adequately addressed, said Ahmed Khalil, projects engineer at the Emirates Friends Society. The project has provided a glimmer of hope to over 450 families, he concluded. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
