Defence Minister of France Herve Morin urged Iran yesterday to halt its nuclear activities and to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with transparency as its current programme threatens the countries in the region and the world.

Morin is in UAE's capital to participate in the opening ceremony of the International Defence Exhibition, IDEX 2009 and to inspect the installations at France's military base due to be opened this spring.

Speaking on the sidelines of IDEX, Morin also called on Iran to contribute towards making the region free from weapons of mass destruction.

Morin said that the Gulf region faces a number of threats related to security and maritime navigation. So Iran should participate in a constructive dialogue with its neighbours to quell their fears.

He also said that Iran's nuclear programme is one of the factors that contribute to imbalance in the region, and France, along with Gulf countries; wish to enter into a dialogue with Iran.

The defence minister said that the bilateral relations between UAE and France are historical and are distinguished with mutual trust.

The UAE-French relations are rich in projects and stand as a model for cooperation and integration among friendly countries, Morin stressed.

UAE is a real partner of France as it is evident through the joint defence agreement signed between the two countries early in 1994. These relations are firmly rooted in constant political dialogue, especially in issues concerning the regional security, Morin said.

He added that France is committed to strengthen its military cooperation with UAE in the field of defence.

France's Military base in UAE to be operational by May this year, is an evidence of the commitment of French President Sarkozy to enhance relations between the two countries and his keenness in seeing France play a major and vital role in the region for establishing peace and security, Morin said. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
