Full praise for Dubai 2003

From the heads of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to the Singaporean team planning the 2006 meetings, everyone was full of praise for Dubai and the Dubai 2003 staff.

Kaspar Villiger, chairman of the Boards of Governors, expressed the appreciation of the Fund and Bank to the authorities in Dubai and the UAE for the hospitality extended to them. "Whenever Switzerland would have to organize such an event, we would ask the authorities of Dubai to send us their organization and planning staff, they did such excellent work," Villiger said in the closing press conference yesterday. James Wolfensohn, president of the World Bank, echoed that sentiment. "I think this meeting was actually a really useful step forward in two respects," said Wolfensohn.

"The first is I think that there was a greater sense of balance in the discussions between the developed and the developing countries... and perhaps as important as anything, the ability for us to meet here in Dubai and project an image of this part of the world as not being just an area of conflict, but an area of growth and great potential is something that I will remember." Horst Kohler, managing director of the IMF, said Dubai was an example not only for the Arab world but the whole world in its approach and forward stance.

"Dubai and the United Arab Emirates' approach to policy and how they see things is encouraging because their approach is they rely on their own abilities and creativity, they are self-responsible, they are self-confident and outward looking," he said. But perhaps the most telling remark came from Ximena Tombrink, a Chilean resident of Dubai responsible for manning the information desk in the central concourse.

"At the end of the day, the best thing about this meeting is to see that the whole world is just one global village, and that global village is also Dubai," she said. The meetings, then, may have ended, but what it has achieved for this city and this nation will remain. Dubai is no longer the city that could, but the city that could and did. (The Gulf News)
