The GCC consultative board held in Abu Dhabi yesterday its first meeting of the 9th session under the chairmanship of the UAE. As a new elect-chairman, Dr. Hadef bin Juan Al Dhahiri, Director of the UAE University, presided over the two-day meeting in the presence of GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman Al Attiya.

In his inaugural address, Al Dhahiri said : 'The significance of GCC consultative body is growing day by day especially in this critical juncture of rapid developments. 'The GCC needs to double its efforts in order to keep pace with these developments and meet aspirations of leaders and peoples of member states,' he maintained.

Highlighting the two key topics of agenda, Al Dhahiri added that proper attention should be lent to economic citizenship and economic partnership with neighbouring countries as this would add new building bloc to the GCC's economic structure and further enforce its political and economic stability. 'We need more effort to make influence of these two key issues to be directly felt by the commercial, economic, political and security life of the GCC citizens,' he underlined.

On his turn, GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman Al Attiya briefed the gathering on resolutions made by the Fahd summit held in Abu Dhabi in December 2005 and updated them the latest regional and international developments. 'The challenge before the GCC today is to press ahead with plans to finalising requirements of the GCC common market before the end of 2007,' he said.

He said that he was confident that the technical committees would come up with the adequate mechanism before that time. The meeting was opened by Yusouf Saleh Al Saleh of Bahrain as Chairman of the 7th session, who thanked UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for the UAE hosting of the event. He presented a report on the works of the 7th session. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
