The Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States' (GCC) Undersecretaries of the Ministries of Information and GCC Information officials concluded in Abu Dhabi yesterday their preparatory meeting, calling for more GCC effective unified media discourse. They endorsed a number of resolutions to be submitted to the 19th meeting of the GCC Information Ministers, which will be held in Abu Dhabi on Sunday under chairmanship of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works, Chairman of National Media Council (NMC).

The meeting in which the UAE delegation was headed by Saeed Abdullah bin Badowa Al Darmeki, Executive Director for the Media Activities at NMC, was attended by Acting Director of Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation (BRTC) Ali bin Mohammed Al Rumaihi, Dr Abdullah bin Saleh Al Jaser, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abdullah bin Showain Al Howsani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information in Sultanate Oman, Mubarak bin Jaham Al Kuwari, Executive President of Qatar Media Corporation and Sheikh Salman Sabah Al Salem Al Hamod, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Information in Kuwait and other GCC media officials.

Sheikh Salman Sabah Al Salem called for concerted efforts to attain the objectives and endeavours of the GCC leaders and ministers of Information, on realising more stability in the region through unifying media discourse, and tackling the changes surrounding the GCC region.

"Due to huge technological progress and great influence of the visual, audio or printed media, which turned the world into the global village, on the communities, it is incumbent on our officials to cooperate and work diligently to immunise our GCC community from bad ideas that target our unity," he added, wishing the meeting would reach positive resolutions that would further cement the GCC bonds.

Sheikh Salman thanked Sheikh Hamdan Mubarak Al Nahyan for good reception and hospitality. For his part, Khalid bin Salem Al Ghassani, Assistant Secretary General for the Cultural and Information Affairs at the GCC General Secretariat, said a number of media issues to boost joint media work, has been discussed in the meeting, among others, Joint GCC Media Strategy, which was endorsed by the Supreme Council in its 31st session.

He added that the memo of the General Secretariat on activation of the media work in the light of the resolution of the Ministerial Council's 119 session, was also discussed ahead of submitting it to the 19th meeting of the GCC Information ministers.

Al Ghassani underlined that the GCC undersecretaries stressed the importance of effective media to correct the image being circulated by some media agencies, which misinform public about what is going on in the GCC, especially the last events in Bahrain. He added that the effective media memo was presented in the U.S. due to presence of huge media agencies there.

The undersecretaries and media officials were briefed about the reports of the GCC radios and TVs and Joint Media Corporation, on the progress attained since the 18th session of the GCC Information Ministers. The participants thanked in the meeting chaired by Ibrahim Al Abed, Director General of NMC, the UAE for its good hospitality and reception. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
