GCC backs UAE's rights to islands

The Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) today reiterated its full support for the UAE's right to its three islands of Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunbs, occupied by Iran, and called again on Tehran to respond to the UAE's peaceful initiatives to resolve the dispute or accept taking it to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). A final communiqué issued after a two-day summit of GCC leaders here, backed 'all measures undertaken by the UAE to regain sovereignty on its three islands peacefully. The communiqué refuted Tehran's claims and measures on the islands as null and void. The GCC instructed its ministerial council to look into all possible peaceful means through which the UAE can recover its legitimate rights to its three islands. ' The GCC rejects the continued Iranian occupation of the UAE islands and backs the UAE's full sovereignty over its islands as part and parcel of the UAE, the communiqué said.
