The 14th meeting of the GCC higher education ministers has been opened by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in Mina Salam, Dubai, UAE.

The meeting will discuss a number of topics on promoting cooperation on educational development in the Gulf.

In his opening speech, Sheikh Nahyan said the regional and global economic and social challenges and developments require developing and strengthening education to further boost the process of social and economic development in the Arabian Gulf States.

He urged Gulf States to provide education opportunities to about two third of their population which are under 30 and represent a significant part of their national resources.

Therefore, he went on to say, education officials in the Gulf States have to expand continuous learning programs and lifetime education as well as to work on creating job opportunities for students and increase their contribution to the economy.

Secretary General of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Abdul Rehman al-Aitya, in his speech which was delivered by GCC Assistant secretary general, noted proposals by member states for creating academic exchange program to boost interaction among GCC students. He stressed that realising the meeting's proposals in the form of tangible work plans would push joint actions way forward.

He expressed hopes that the meeting would realize the aspirations of the citizens of the Gulf States for joint action and cooperation in the area of education.

He further expressed thanks for the UAE leadership for organizing the meeting and for hospitality. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
