GCC leaders endorse peace as a strategic choice for Arabs

GCC leaders concluded their fourth Consultative Summit in Jeddah yesterday, asserting peace as the strategic choice for the Arabs. In a press conference after the conclusion of the summit, GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Attiya said that the leaders heard a briefing on the outcome of Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah's visit to Washington and the results of the tripartite Arab summit held in Sharm El Sheikh between Saudi, Egyptian and Jordanian leaders. He said that leaders affirmed their support for Prince Abdullah's proposal and their adherence to it as a basis for any initiatives aimed at achieving a comprehensive peace in the Middle East.

On the UAE Islands occupied by Iran, Attiya said that the GCC leaders were waiting for the outcome of the visit of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, to Iran. He added that the leaders welcomed the positive outcome of the recent Arab summit in Beirut, expressing the hope that Iraq would take concrete steps to bring more stability to the region. Attiya said that the GCC leaders also affirmed their firm belief in the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq. He added that GCC states hoped that no Arab country including Iraq would be a target for a military action. He said the leaders had called upon both Pakistan and India to exercise self restraint and resolve their conflicts through peaceful dialogue. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
