GCC leaders will discuss a number of significant issues

President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will head the country's delegation to the 25th summit of the GCC leaders due to be held in Bahrain from December 20 to 21. This summit is of great significance at the level of boosting GCC joint action and at the level of reviewing latest developments in regional and international arenas.

The GCC leaders will discuss, in their 25th summit at the level of coordination and integration, ways to enhance GCC joint action, and a range of political, economic, social, military and security topics.

In this regard, there are also several important recommendations submitted by the ministerial committees to be discussed by the leaders, including steps to implement the joint GCC market, a time table to set up GCC Monetary Union, issuance of a unified GCC currency at the end of 2010, visions and programmes of comprehensive development for education, mechanism for regulation of foreign workers employment, finalizing implementation of smart identity cards, water grid project, construction of intra-GCC rail road and enhancing cooperation in the environment field.

The summit will also discuss a number of issues relating to military and security cooperation, including coordination between the GCC countries in fighting terrorist crimes. The Iraqi issue is one of the subjects that tops the agenda. The leaders will discuss capable means to support the efforts being exerted to restore peace and security to Iraq, safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

At the political level, the summit will also discuss latest developments in Palestinian territories, significance of unifying the Palestinian ranks for the success of the coming Palestinian presidential elections, emphasizing firm national principles for the Palestinian people in ending the Israeli occupation and establishing their own independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. It is worth noting that Sheikh Khalifa and GCC Secretary General Abdul Rahman bin Hamad Al Attiya, reviewed in Abu Dhabi on December 12, the topics on the agenda of the GCC leaders summit.
