GCC reiterates support for UAE over its islands

Jeddah - The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) reiterated yesterday its support for the UAE's sovereignty over its three islands occupied by Iran. "The GCC backs the UAE's right to sovereignty over its three islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs, and Abu Musa, their territorial waters, airspace, continental shelf and economic zone as part and parcel of the UAE, the group's foreign ministers said yesterday at the end of their one-day meeting here.

In their final statement, the ministers regretted that contacts with Iran had not produced any positive results that can help reach a solution to the issue of the islands, which in turn, will maintain security and stability in the region.

The ministers called on Iran to respond to efforts made by the UAE and the international community to settle the issue either through direct negotiations or by referring the case to the International Court of Justice. Renewing its firm stance, the GCC said it would consider all means conducive to restoring these islands to the UAE. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
