Sharm El Sheikh - The United Arab Emirates has stressed the importance of partnership and exchange of expertise between Asian and Middle Eastern countries and the need to carve out realistic and flexible strategies to strengthen that partnership.

This came during a speech delivered by HE Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, before the Second Asia-Middle East Dialogue (AMED II), currently held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El Sheikh under the theme "Partnership in Action Towards a Better Future". The forum is being attended by 48 countries.

Gargash said in his speech the government of the UAE was seeking to implement a number of laws and measures to curb inflation, to ensure that a proper price monitoring mechanism is in place for consumer protection and to combat monopoly by creating a special department at the Ministry of Economy.

"The UAE is one of the countries that sought to adapt to change and to make use of them. The country has also worked to confront challenges and negative impacts of the change in a way that maintains its peculiarity as a federal country and preserves its religious, social and cultural values," Dr Gargash said.

On the political front, he continued, a development process was initiated in February 2007 when the government strategy for 2008-2010 was announced. The strategy, the first mandatory performance excellence programme, is based on six pillars, namely; social development, economic development, justice, safety, government development, infrastructure and remote areas development.

"The UAE also endeavoured to draw up a strategy for diversifying economy and enhancing public-private partnership. The strategy's first achievement was the enactment of the anti-dumping laws and updating the trade agencies law." Gargash added that the strategy helped the UAE economy perform better as the country's Gross Domestic Product rose by 16.5 percent in 2007, while non-oil sectors registered a 21 percent growth during the same period. "The UAE economy ranked the best among Arab economies in terms of attracting foreign investments. It was also voted the 22nd best economy in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund's forecasts," Gargash noted. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
