Gargash meets UN Secretary-General

New York, NY: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon received on Thursday UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash.

During the meeting, the Secretary-General enquired about the health condition of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and asked Dr. Gargash to convey his regards to His Highness and his best wishes to him for swift recovery.

Mr. Ban expressed his profound appreciation for the President's incessant support for the UN and for its humanitarian programmes. He also highly valued the UAE's humanitarian role regionally and internationally and its historic support for UN efforts.

The UN chief commended the UAE as a successful development model in the region and as a regional constructive actor.

The meeting reviewed UAE's efforts to back the UN Summit on Climate Change to be held in New York next September and preparations for the special two-day high-level meeting Abu Dhabi will host in May. The meeting will be called the "Abu Dhabi Ascent" after its host city The "Abu Dhabi Ascent," to be held from 4-5 May will bring Ministers as well as business, finance, and civil society leaders together to develop a range of proposals for action and determine how their countries, businesses and organizations may become more involved in various initiatives so that partnerships can be broadened and deepened to deliver concrete action at the summit.

He also hailed the UAE's role in the successful arrangements for the Summit.

For his part, the UAE minister said the UAE is seeking through its plans and programmes to be part of active international cooperation to address future challenges and concerns, notably those connected to climate change and energy.

The meeting, which was attended by Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, discussed regional developments, mainly humanitarian operations to alleviate the human tragedy in Syria and mechanisms to advance these efforts amidst continuous violence and suffering of Syrian refugees. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
