German Defence Minister, Peter Struck has expressed great satisfaction with the talks he had with a number of senior UAE officials during the past two days of his visit to the country. He said the talks centred on boosting relations of defence cooperation between the UAE and Germany.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Struck expressed satisfaction with the outcome of his visit to the UAE. He said, after visiting the German forces here that are providing military training for a number of personnel of the Iraqi National Security Forces, that defence cooperation between the UAE and Germany had witnessed significant growth. "Our forces, in cooperation with their UAE counterpart, are doing a wonderful job in order to rebuild and support the Iraqi forces to enable them shoulder effectively the task of maintaining security and stability in the whole of Iraq," he said.

He expressed satisfaction and happiness with the meeting he held yesterday with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He said the meeting centred on how best to boost relations of cooperation between the two countries in all fields, particularly in the field of military and defence.

Sheikh Mohammed discussed with the German Defence Minister a number of security issues related to how to boost security and stability in the Gulf region and the importance of international cooperation in this regard, in addition to latest developments in the region.

The German Defence Minister also expressed satisfaction with a similar meeting he held earlier with Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the latter's palace in Za'abeel, Dubai, during which the two reviewed bilateral relations between the UAE and Germany, with emphasis on the field of military and defence cooperation. They also discussed the current situation in the region and reiterated the need to achieve peace and security in the region so as to achieve social and economic development for the peoples in the region.

On the next step within the framework of UAE-German cooperation, Struck said that the German forces here may take more Iraqi soldiers for training in batches. He pointed out that 430 Iraqi soldiers and officers have so far being trained here in the UAE by the German forces, adding that a number of military engineers would be trained to take up the responsibility of maintaining the German military hardware which Germany gifted to the Iraqi Army.

On the level of German participation in the next International Defence Exhibition, IDEX 2005, to be held here in February next year, the German Defence Minister said that he had informed the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince during their discussions yesterday that Germany will actively participate in IDEX 2005, adding that his country will showcase its armoury, including armour vehicles, tanks, artilleries and war ships, as well as various kinds of arms.

Asked if he sees any possibility of UAE and Germany signing new defence contract or with any other Gulf country in the nearest future, Struck said that negotiations in that regard was continuing. "Perhaps it may lead to something very significant," he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
