German Defence Minister Peter Struck said on Sunday his country was keen to enhance its defence cooperation with the United Arab Emirates. He said German state of the art military equipment would be on display at the Abu Dhabi International Defence Exhibition (IDEX 2005).

Struck, who was speaking to IDEX 2005 Show daily, pointed out that the UAE "is a very important country to Germany not only in defence cooperation but at various economic and political levels as well." "Our participation in this big event has become so important in order to demonstrate to countries of the region how developed the German industrial production is," opined the German official.

On whether he expects his country will strike new defence contracts with the UAE or Gulf Cooperation Council's states, Struck said negotiations in this respect were underway and might result in important things. He added that although such talks focusing on submarines, warships and training aircraft, had been running for years nothing has been concluded so far.

On joint cooperation to transfer technology to the UAE, Struck said his country would continue work on the joint venture with UAE to manufacture the military training aircraft, Mica, which is to be used in training pilots on captaining F16 planes.

He said the German-European Industrial and Defence Group is prepared to talk to the UAE Offset Group on setting up economic and development projects in the UAE. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
