The UAE will present its achievements on labour policies and rights before the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) to be held in Manila from 29th-30th October 2008.

Labour Minister HE Saqr Ghobash, who is leading a high-ranking delegation representing ministries of foreign affairs and interior and the National Media Council, will explain to the gathering results of the Ministerial Consultations on Contractual Labour held in Abu Dhabi last January and the understandings reached by labour origin and destination countries on management of labour contractual cycle.

Ghobash said the UAE engagement in this forum followed the successful hosting in last January of the Abu Dhabi labour dialogue which culminated into the Abu Dhabi labour declaration.

Ghobash will also apprise the delegates about the UAE initiatives and regional and international partnerships seeking to address challenges facing its labour market in light of the ongoing economic and construction boom.

President of the Philippines Gloria Arroyo will deliver the keynote address at the international labour conference while UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will speak about the role of stability of workforce in serving economic prosperity. A number of international figures and representatives of organisations dealing with labour, migration and development will attend the two-day meeting.

'The Ministry of Labour has made great strides in regulating the local labour market .The most important of these achievements were the transparent agreements signed by the UAE with labour-sending countries which based on international labour standards,' the minister indicated.

He reiterated the UAE commitment to reinvigorate partnerships embodied in the Abu Dhabi declaration, guided by the federal government strategy and directives by the UAE leaders.

The GFMD has become an annual international conference on migration and development issues. It developed as a regular forum following a meeting known as the High Level Dialogue on Migration organized by the United Nations in New York in September 2006.

The first GFMD was held in Brussels, Belgium on July 9 to 11, 2007. It featured back-to-back sessions by civil society groups (Civil Society Day) and the governmental groups (Governmental Days). Three specific themes were tackled in the conference namely (a) Human capital development and labor mobility, (b) Remittances and other diaspora resources, and (c) Enhancing institutional and policy coherence and promoting partnerships. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
