For the first time this week, Microlight flights are being offered in Abu Dhabi to those who want to get a very special look at the UAE capital. And after landing following my airborne adventure it was clear there is no finer way to look at the city.
The scene at the edge of Port Zayed was one of anticipation when Captain Laszlo Toth, who is an ex-military pilot, showed me the five microlight planes, one of which would be giving me a breathtaking view of Abu Dhabi.
My pilot Vincent Ferinc strapped me up, put a helmet on me and we were ready to go. The noise from the engine drowned out the heavy beating of my heart. The microlight aircraft, which has a maximum speed of 120kph, raced along the runway parallel to the water and then the air caught under the wings and we were up and away.
We took a right-hand turn towards the huge UAE flag on the Corniche with Emirates Palace in the distance and the view was magnificent, with the sea below and no obstacles to impair the sight. The journey itself was smooth and Vincent was able to move at different speeds and virtually hover, allowing me to take in all the breathtaking scenes below.
Vincent then turned the plane left by 180 degrees and we moved parallel to the Corniche towering above Abu Dhabi's fine collection of skyscrapers.
The flights, which are provided by Hungarian firm Microlight Company, cost Dh200 for a 10 minute ride and give spectacular views of Abu Dhabi. They were brought to Abu Dhabi by the Abu Dhabi tourist board and authorities after appearing at the Al Ain Airshow in January. Colonel Mohammed bin Barrack said the microlights had captured the public's imagination with many wanting to experience the flights themselves.
"Because of the huge numbers of people wanting to enjoy the unique flying experience the Abu Dhabi authorities had promised they would arrange it,” he added. "We are promoting Abu Dhabi to the people and a fantastic opportunity to see the beautiful Corniche from the sky.” The flights will run until the end of the month from 8am until midnight with a special night show with lasers each day.
