Grand pageant in Abu Dhabi

A colourful pageant led by mounted policemen in all finery, followed by a traditional camel caravan with a herd of goats and sheep in tow was held in Abu Dhabi yesterday to mark the 36th anniversary of the accession of the President, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, as Ruler of Abu Dhabi.



A local wedding procession with the bride on a camel, a band of folk dancers, traditionally harnessed horses, a long cavalcade of cars carrying portraits of Sheikh Zayed and floats depicting past and present life in UAE, marked the beginning of four-day celebration organised by the Public Relations Department of the Abu Dhabi Police Directorate.



The procession carrying banners with the slogan 'Loyalty and Allegiance to the Nation and Zayed' started from the Police Directorate Office. The procession found its way to the Police Officers' Club through the East Coast Road, where floats by various government departments like the Civil Defence, Police, Municipality etc. joined the parade.



Senior police officers received the parade at the main entrance of the Club, which will be the hub for all activities marking the occasion for the next three days.



An exhibition of old pictures and arms and ammunition and a heritage village depicting the early life style of the Gulf were also inaugurated on the occasion. Some very rare guns, ammunitions and swords from Islamic era and later periods are on display.



The exhibition has been organised by the Al Ain Department of Antiquities and Tourism. The Heritage Village has been set up with by the Heritage Society.



Later in the evening an opera called 'Zayed Era' was staged. Major-General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Under-Secretary, Ministry of Interior, other senior police officers and dignitaries witnessed the show. A troupe of 10 well-known UAE and Arab artistes supported by another 40 junior artist are staging the unique show. (The Khaleej Times)
