President Dr. Karolos Papoulias left yesterday at the end of a two-day state visit to the UAE, during which he had held talks with President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and other high ranking officials.

He was seen off at Dubai International Airport by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Deputy Ruler and Minister of Finance and Industry, ministers and other senior officials.

The two leaders had exchanged views on a number of issues of common concern and expressed their strong desire to strengthen friendship and cooperation between their two countries, according to a press statement issued at the end of the visit.

"At the regional level, the two sides reviewed the situation in the Gulf region, underlined the need for maintaining security and stability there and for seeking to make the Middle East, including the Gulf region, a Weapon-of-Mass-Destruction free zone as well as solving the outstanding problems through peaceful means on the basis of the UN Charter and respecting the rule of international law," said the statement.

During the talks, Sheikh Khalifa underscored his country's interest to consolidate economic, trade and investment ties with the European Union's member states.

Bilateral relations and ways to bolster them in the best interest of both countries were also tackled, according to the statement. Respective Ministers of both sides held a series of meetings in which they pondered over means to further enhance bilateral relations at various levels.

The Greek President, the statement added, has extended an invitation to Sheikh Khalifa to visit Greece. The UAE President accepted the invitation and the date of the visit will be fixed later via the normal diplomatic channels.

A top-level delegation, comprising a number of ministers and senior officials at the commercial shipping, economic, financial, investment, development and cooperation sectors, accompanied the Greek President during his visit. President Papoulias said the great achievements made by the UAE at various levels were well admired by his people. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
