The Gulf Defence Conference to be held for the first time as an alternative to the series of International Defence conferences, MILCON, which constitutes a significant shift towards the strategic issues that concern the GCC countries, will be held within the framework of the Fifth International Defence Exhibition, IDEX 200, to be held in Abu Dhabi from March 18-22. In accordance to the directions of Lt General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, the two-day conference to be held on March 19 and 20, has been organised by the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research, ECSSR, An elite group of distinguished persons and eminent experts in defence affairs from the GCC countries, representatives of a number international scientific centres from London, the US Congress and Nato, and a number of commanders and military analysts from various countries will participate. The conference will discuss in its first session a number of military issues that concern the GCC countries and their defence policy.

The convening of this conference acquires great significance as it is being held simultaneously with positive tangible developments at the level of military and defence co-operation and co-ordination among the Council's member countries. It follows the signing of the Joint Defence Agreement by the leaders of the GCC countries at the summit held in Bahrain, as well as confirmation of the Manama declaration which was issued by the summit for consolidation of the principle of joint security of the GCC countries by bolstering joint co-operation and co-ordination in security and defence issues to protect national and regional security.
