Port-au-Prince - Haitian President Rene Preval hailed the efforts of UAE President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide emergency aid to the victims of earthquake in his country.

During a meeting with the delegation of the UAE's Red Crescent Authority (RCA), Preval also said that accurate figures on the number of victims are not available so far and urged the international humanitarian organisations to quickly coordinate assistance priorities.

RCA delegation is currently on an inspection tour in the Republic of Haiti to assess the relief requirements. The meeting with the Haitian President was also attended by the Prime Minister of Haiti Jean-Max Bellerive, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic Carlos Morales Troncoso and a number of senior officials in the country.

They discussed prospects for cooperation between the two sides with regard to relief operations and immediate government requirements which RCA can meet. A number of dietary needs and rationing, as well as other humanitarian issues were also discussed at the meeting.

The delegation Head Humaid Al Shamsi said that RCA is currently working to set up and equip a field hospital near the border with the Dominican Republic. He added that distribution of relief supplies is the pressing need of the time and RCA has been working with other humanitarian organizations to speed delivery of humanitarian aid to the victims.

On another level, a third cargo plane carrying emergency relief supplies sent by UAE's Red Crescent Authority has landed at the Las Americas International Airport in the Dominican Republic for distribution among the Haitian quake victims.

The relief efforts of RCA come as per directives from President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and are followed up by HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces. The relief operations are carried out under the supervision of Ruler's Representative in Western Region and Chairman of RCA HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
