The Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award Mission, headed by its Secretary General Ali Khalifa bin Talith, has concluded its visit to the UAE- Jordan Camp for Syrian refugees in the region Muraigeb Al Fuhoud near Zarqa, Jordan, being supervised by the UAE Red Crescent Authority in cooperation with the Jordanian authorities.

The trip came as a humanitarian gesture following direct directives from H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council and patron of the Award. The visit organised in collaboration with the Red Crescent aims to alleviate the suffering of the inhabitants of the camp of displaced families from Syria as a result political and security situation there, especially children who are estimated to be 500 children living with their families in the camp.

As per the directives of Dubai Crown Prince, the Award has resorted to a novel and innovative way to entertain and educate the children about photography and the use of cameras by distributing a number of digital cameras to students and teach them the methods and techniques behind it. A number of distinguished pupils were chosen afterwards, in coordination with their supervisors and camp management, and were encouraged to take pictures applying what they have learnt so far during this short period of training. Thousands of in-kind gifts were distributed amongst participants and their families.

Talith pointed out to the children's beyond expression joy towards the initiative by the Award, which was way over the organisers' expectations. "The children showed great desire to learn", he added, "as the initiative provided them an opportunity they had wished for in better circumstances than their current one. They were overjoyed receiving those cameras and that was expressed by their positive participation and interaction at the workshops".

He commended the great effort exerted by the management of the camp, especially the role played by its manager, Hadi Hamad Al Kaabi, who facilitated the work of the Award team during their visit to the camp, affirming that the Emirati management system has been proven effective through the extremely high benevolent attitude towards the residents of the camp, traits that stem from the noble values adopted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and consolidated by UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his brothers the rulers of the Emirates.

For his part, the Manager of the UAE-Jordan Camp, Hadi Hamad Al Kaabi thanked Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his generous initiative, affirming that such compassion is no stranger to UAE rulers who stood by the Syrian people in their ordeal, and helped them in so many ways, namely through the funding of such camp for the Syrian refugees in collaboration with the Jordanian authority. Al Kabbi commended Sheikh Hamdan's noble and generous initiative, expressing his happiness over the children's participation in the workshops. He also noted that various humanitarian aids reaching the camp and being distributed by the Red Crescent young Emirati workers living on camp; however, it was this initiative by the Award that has made the inhabitants of the camp, children and their parents alike, overjoyed. Al Kaabi also welcomed all those willing to offer any assistance to the dwellers of the camp or those wishing to obtain information about the services provided.

During their visit, the management of the Award was received by poetic verses recited by the children to welcome their arrival and was handed drawings that denoted the children's deep appreciation and affection to the people of the UAE and its leaders.

It was most notable the efficient method of work followed by the Emirati youth, organising the camp, working under the UAE Red Crescent Authority in terms of addressing pressing matters and providing medical and nursing cadres; in addition to other organisational and management services.

Upon receiving the digital cameras, the Award's delegation collected the memory cards to gather the participants works of art and shortlist a number of them to be displayed in an exhibition especially dedicated for their work, following which, a publication by the same will be issued and will include the participants' personal photos. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
