The 19th meeting of the Ministers of Information of members of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, or GCC, will address, among other issues, coordination among GCC states on the regional and international developments, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mubarak, Minister of Public Works and Chairman of the National Media Council said.

The joint GCC media strategy (2010-2020), a draft of which was adopted at the 31st session of the GCC Supreme Council held in Abu Dhabi last December, serves as a reference framework for promoting media cooperation among the regional countries and will be a significant item on the agenda of the meeting along with other issues.

GCC Information Ministers, at their meeting today, Sunday at Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi, will discuss recommendations by heads of external information departments, TV channels, radio stations and news agencies of GCC states, Sheikh Hamdan told WAM. He said a coordination committee which consists of undersecretaries of the Information Ministries came up with an array of practical proposals which will be set forth in the preparatory meetings of the 32st session of the GCC Supreme Council in Riyadh next December.

Sheikh Hamdan further noted that the said strategy could play a role in advancing the performance of media organizations of GCC countries, promoting cooperation between the regional bloc and the rest of the world as well as help achieve the goals of development in the region.

He further said GCC information ministers will also consider proposals to hold GCC Days in Europe, a series of annual events to highlight the region's culture, progress and development, in other capitals outside Europe.

Speaking on the UAE's National Media Council, or NMC, Sheikh Hamdan said the body plays a major role in promoting the achievements the country has been making in all spheres. "The more the UAE's media observe the modern media rules, the more it becomes the major reference for all parties seeking authentic information which truly reflect the reality of the achievements of the UAE as well as the challenges it face." "The UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is maximizing the benefits of information revolution and the modernisation of its media organisations through adding more efficient expertise and qualified young national human resources," Sheikh Hamdan added.

He cited the multi-lingual WAM website as an effective tool to reach out to the rest of the world and promote the progress the UAE is making through providing the latest updates on political, cultural and social developments.

He also noted that the UAE is home for 15 TV channels, 24 radio stations, 9 Arabic dailies, 7 English dailies and hundreds of weeklies, monthlies and periodicals. "The UAE has four free media zones in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah which host hundreds of media organisations from all over the world," he said.

"Based on its belief in the need for opening up to the other to properly introduce our culture and civilized comprehensive boom, gives special attention to participating in the GCC Days series of events in European and Asian capitals," Sheikh Hamdan concluded. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
