Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has donated Dh10 million for the Rafah reconstruction programme. This was announced in Abu Dhabi yesterday during a day-long charity campaign to raise funds for the reconstruction of Rafah, Zeitoun and other areas which suffered immense destruction during recent events in Palestine.

The charity campaign which was organised by the RCS Society, in conjunction with Emirates Media Inc., is part of a wider RCS relief assistance programme ordered by H.H President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Rafah and Zeitoun area in Gaza. The programme will see the reconstruction of 800 houses. Apart from the cash contribution of Dh10 million, Sheikh Hamdan will fund the building of 70 houses in Rafah.

In an interview with Emirates Satellite channel yesterday , Sheikh Hamdan said the massive relief programme undertaken by the UAE in Palestine is part of a long-standing UAE tradition in responding to humanitarian causes worldwide. "History is replete with humanitarian initiatives that prove beyond any doubt that President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has always been at the forefront of those reaching out to the needy. If any thing, this pioneering role underscores his sensitivity to the entire humanity,” Sheikh Hamdan told the channel.

Sheikh Hamdan further noted that the UAE is coordinating with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) so as to address the appalling humanitarian crisis created by the recent Israeli incursions into Rafah. Sheikh Hamdan urged the GCC, Arab and Islamic states to respond to UNRWA appeal for Palestine. He expressed confidence that UNRWA authorities will ensure that houses are built for those affected and that adequate documents to this effect will be provided.

He revealed that an earlier project for the reconstruction of Jenin is nearing completion and that some of Jenin residents will soon be moving to the newly built 800 houses. Rafah resident will also have similar advantage when their new house are reconstructed.

Sheikh Hamdan renewed the UAE condemnation of the Israeli incursions into Rafah and the subsequent displacement, eviction of residents and destruction of houses. Such acts are barbaric and inhuman, said Sheikh Hamdan. "One would have wished that the Arab summit in Tunisia had adopted this initiative to offer support to our brethren in Rafah. Nevertheless, I still hope that every Arab citizen will participate in this endeavour” concluded Sheikh Hamdan. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
