H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister announced yesterday evening the launch of the United Nations 2009 Humanitarian Appeal from Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Hamdan reaffirmed the commitment of United Arab Emirates to the global humanitarian principles and its continued support to the afflicted and hard hit as well as the needy people in the entire world.

Making the announcement of the launch of the uniform UN appeal for 2009 for the first time in the region, Sheikh Hamdan said he adds his voice to millions of those hard hit all over the world and all humanitarian organizations operating under the umbrella of the uniform appeal.

He expressed sincere hopes that that governmental and humanitarian organizations would respond to support the UN in its efforts to improve the human conditions and coordinate such efforts within one framework.

For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres said the fact "that the 2009 Humanitarian Appeal is being launched in Abu Dhabi today gives recognition to the long tradition of generosity of the UAE and countries of this region towards international humanitarian relief efforts." "The deep-rooted culture of charity and philanthropy is evidenced by the numerous local NGOs and Foundations based here. Examples of the good work being carried out by the UAE Red Crescent Authority (including the Sheikha Fatima Fund for refugee women and children), the Zayed Foundation, and Dubai Cares, to name a few, can be easily found around the world," he added.

H.E. Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash delivered UAE speech in which he paid tribute to the UN for its persistent, good drive to unify humanitarian efforts and its strive to boost international community efforts to mobilise support and draw attention for urgent and pressing humanitarian causes. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
