AMMAN: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the U.A.E. Red Crescent Authority (RCA) opened yesterday the second phase of the Emirati-Jordanian camp in Mrajeeb Al Fhood in Jordan.

The camp, built on an area of 25,000 square meters to accommodate over 10,000 Syrian refugees, was set up by the RCA in line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Hamdan praised the support and follow up of His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the U.A.E. Armed Forces.

He said that the U.A.E. represented an example of the unlimited humanitarian giving and recalled the noble stances of the late Sheikh Zayed bin sultan Al Nahyan towards humanitarian causes across the world.

Sheikh Hamdan said the camp symbolises the strong and fruitful cooperation between the U.A.E. and Jordan and comes within the framework of the U.A.E. policy of providing humanitarian and healthcare assistance to the needy people.

"The situation in Syrian refugees in Jordan is difficult and we need to act swiftly to provide decent living conditions to them, especially to the women and children," he said.

Sheikh Hamdan lauded the efforts by the UN organisations, The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the Jordanian Red Crescent and other non-government and civil societies organisations in supporting and coordinating relief aid to the refugees.

Sheikh Hamdan arrived earlier to the camp. He was accompanied by Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development (MICAD), Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Hussain Hazza Al Majali, Jordanian Interior Minister, Abdullah Nasser Sultan Al Ameri, U.A.E. Ambassador to Jordan, Sultan bin Khalfan Al Romaithi, Director of the office of the Ruler's Representative in Western Region, Dr Hamdan Musalam Al Mazrouei, Board Chairman of the RCA and Dr Mohammed Atiq Al Falahi, Secretary General of the RCA.

In a ceremony held at the camp, Mubarak Hamad Al Junaibi, head of the camp, said the RCA operates the field hospital in the camp which caters for 800 patients a day and manages the camp which currently caters to 4,084 refugees.

He thanked Jordan for granting the RCA the camp management.

Sheikh Hamdan toured the camp and met with a number of Syrian families. He also stopped at the Mrajeeb Al Fhood School which serves 1,500 primary and secondary students through a staff of 117 teachers.

Sheikh Hamdan also visited the camp's medical centre which has provided, since its inauguration in April 2014, treatment services to 90,000 patients.

At the end of his tour, Sheikh Hamdan met with the Emirati aid team and praised their efforts in lending a helping hand to their Syrian brothers. - Emirates News Agency, WAM –
