H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and President of Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) has given instructions to ERC to provide Dh5 million in emergency relief aid for refugees in the Lebanese border town of Arsal where the recent developments displaced tens of thousands of people to neighbouring villages and towns already congested with of Syrian refugees.

"On directives from the wise leadership, U.A.E. promptly responds to humanitarian appeals from any part of the world where people go through crises and ordeals, and Emirates Red Crescent's convoys rush to afflicted areas to provide all forms of assistance and support in order to ease the suffering of the victims, who are mainly women and children," said H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan noted that the fleeing of large numbers of residents from the town of Arsal has doubled the burden of fulfilling their needs as the area already hosts around 120,000 Syrian refugees who ERC has been providing with health, food and healthcare aid and shelters since they became refugees in Lebanon. Because of this situation, he further noted, we have responded to the ordeal of these refugees and rushed emergency assistance to them.

Based on an the U.A.E.'s unwavering policy that focus on fulfilling the basic needs of, and guaranteeing the rights of human beings to life and dignity, particularly in the light of the fact that crises, disasters and conflicts are escalating with their destructive spillover affecting wide segments of the afflicted societies, ERC has doubled its relief campaigns, efforts and in-kind aid for many hot spots around the world, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed further noted.

The latest initiative of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed to allocate the amount of Dh5 million is the first humanitarian effort to help the refugees and is in line with ERC's mission to remain at the forefront of agencies offering humanitarian assistance to conflict and disaster zones, including Gaza Strip, despite the multiple dangers facing its field teams.

Tens of thousands of people were forced out by the recent developments of the border town of Arsal on the border with Syria to the towns of Qob Elias, Saadnayel, Taanayel, Al Marj, Bar Elias and Baalbek where large numbers of them sleep in the streets and public parks and are in dire need for food, water and shelters. – Emirates News Agency, WAM – Read more:
