Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has instructed sending of urgent aid to those affected by a devastating cyclone in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hamdan ordered the RCA to carry out an immediate ambitious humanitarian programme to meet the basic needs of the affected people to improve their dire conditions.

Khalifa Nasir Al Suwaidi, Board Chairman of the RCA said, "the RCA has began to execute instructions of Sheikh Hamdan by sending relief supplies to those affected by 'Cyclone Sidr', which claimed the lives of 1, 100 people in Bangladesh, destroyed thousands of homes and sent one million people fleeing". He pointed out that Sheikh Hamdan has been following up the conditions of the affected people and victims of the cyclone. He said the RCA will send more aid based on field reports from the affected areas.

Al Suwaidi noted that Bangladesh is most susceptible to devastating cyclones and floods, indicating that the cyclone which hit Bangladesh in 1970 claimed the lives of 500, 000 people. Another cyclone claimed the lives of 140, 000 people in 1991. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
