The UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, plays an active role in strengthening international efforts to put an end to the suffering of refugees and the dangerous consequences of displacement and uprooting on millions of people worldwide, H.H Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region '&' Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) stressed yesterday.

In a statement on the World Refugee Day, Sheikh Hamdan reiterated the UAE's commitment and support to efforts to stabilise, and promote security in, hotspots around the world in line with directives from Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the follow up by H.H General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

"The UAE will always be a strong supporter for refugees and efforts to put an end to their suffering and hardships and protect their human dignity," Sheikh Hamdan said.

"We look forward to a day when there will be no refugees and everybody will enjoy a stable and dignified life," Sheikh Hamdan added.

He called on the international community to make more efforts to help refugees as well as to shoulder its responsibility of providing better living conditions for victims of displacement. Sheikh Hamdan further expressed concern over the deteriorating and tragic conditions of refugees around the world.

He further noted that last year (2009) was the worst in twenty years for voluntary repatriation due to armed conflicts and crises in certain Asian and African countries.

"The exceptional suffering and conditions for refugees today requires the consolidation of international efforts and strengthening of partnerships among humanitarian organisations," he added.

"Standing for refugees is a duty that rests on the shoulders of all humankind regardless of languages and borders and therefore should not be limited to certain states." Sheikh Hamdan deplored the fact that 80% of refugees worldwide are women and children.

He hailed the efforts of H.H Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Supreme President of the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and Chairwoman of the General Women Union (GWU), the Honorary President of Red Crescent Authority (RCA) and founder of the Fund for Refugee Women.

Sheikh Hamdan further hailed the efforts the UAE's RCA and its partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) which aims to protect around 35 million refugees or uprooted people in 114 countries worldwide.

The UN refugee agency does this in several ways: it ensures the basic human rights of uprooted or stateless people in their countries of asylum or habitual residence end that refugees will not be returned involuntarily to a country where they could face persecution. Longer term, the organisation helps refugees find appropriate durable solutions to their plight, by repatriating voluntarily to their homeland, integrating in countries of asylum or resettling in third countries.
