Hamdan bin Zayed reiterates UAE's role on improving living conditions worldwide

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has stressed the pivotal role played by UAE to improve living conditions worldwide. He reiterated continuous efforts being exerted by the country to alleviate poverty, famine and malnutrition in poor countries through provision of basic needs to guard off diseases, epidemics, deprivation and displacement.

Sheikh Hamdan expressed concerns in a statement marking the World Food Day, which corresponded with Oct., 16, 2007, "on dire humanitarian conditions in which those affected by drought and desertification in a number of countries worldwide. Their condition deteriorates daily due to lack of food and water", he warned that "looming disaster is eminent".

He said that joint international efforts were required to provide food to over 800 million victims of famine according to the recent reports released by UN organisations.

Sheikh Hamdan revealed that the RCA has early assessed the size of catastrophe through its continuous evaluation on food gaps in a number of countries worldwide, particularly in countries hit by wars and natural disasters. He noted that the RCS has been there at the famine theatres whether in Africa and Asia since 1980s and still involved to ease burden on those affected, urging all the categories in the community to support the charity programmes of the RCA.

Sheikh Hamdan commended the existing partnership between the World Food Programme (WFP) and the RCA to provide food to the needy. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
