Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society yesterday appealed to the community members to provide aid to the survivors of the massive earthquake which jolted Java island in Indonesia yesterday.

Sheikh Hamdan called on philanthropists to respond to the efforts being made by the RCS which aim at meeting needs of the people affected by the earthquake. "Reports from the quake scene have confirmed that the Indonesian people are facing a real disaster. The situation requires joint efforts to help the affected people to help them through this ordeal," Sheikh Hamdan said.

Sanaa Al Kutbi, RCS Secretary General, praised Sheikh Hamdan's call, saying that it reflected his noble and kind spirit. She stressed the need for active involvement in the relief efforts by private sector, NGOs and individuals.

She added that Sheikh Hamdan is closely following up the humanitarian situation in Java, noting that RCS staff there have set up a field hospital in collaboration with the Indonesian Red Crescent to provide treatment to the injured. She outlined the RCS programme which entails provision of tents, blankets and other sheltering materials, in addition to foodstuff. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
