Hamdan distributes aid to 896 families in quake-hit areas

In a visit to Pakistan, Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs distributed food and other relief goods among 896 families in quake-hit remote areas. He expressed confidence that businessmen and philanthropists in the UAE would channel their donations to millions of needy people in Pakistan through the UAE's Red Crescent Authority (RCA).

"Any effective humanitarian work is based on fundraising that may help set up development projects and raise the living standards of poor families instead of making them dependent on direct aid," Sheikh Hamdan, who is also RCA Chairman, said on his return.

He lauded as significant the role played by the RCA in enhancing the country's "humanitarian position" at regional and international levels. The RCA has distributed more than Dh2 billion in humanitarian, development and charitable aid programmes over the past two decades inside the UAE and abroad.

Its relief operations are still in progress in Pakistan while it prepares itself to play an even bigger role in the reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts following the earthquake which devastated the country. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
