Deputy Prime Minister and Board Chairman of the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi has stressed on the importance of the Environment 2007 Exhibition and Conference, which opens here tomorrow at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

The great event, which is being held under the auspices of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, closes on January 31.

In a statement to WAM, Sheikh Hamdan said the conference was one of the most important environmental events at the Gulf and Arab levels, adding that this year's edition of the annual event, the forth to be successfully held consecutively, was a testimony for the UAE's deep commitment to the protection of the environment.

He pointed out that the significance of the conference lies in the issues of discussions, which focus mainly on energy sources, including solar, wind and other renewable sources of energy from the marine environment and coastal areas, as well as water treatment and desalination technologies through the use of highly effective means of energy.

Sheikh Hamdan expressed the hope that the conference would come up with a clear vision to successfully face the current and future challenges of developing the comprehensive resources of sustainable energy in arid zones, vision that would form a scientific base for the follow up of the outcome of the conference in the future.

Elaborating on the importance of renewable energy sources Sheikh Hamdan said: "Increasing climatic changes across the globe have made it imperative on us to shift from conventional to renewable energy resources.

According to scientists, renewable energy sources have the potential of providing us with as much clean energy as we need. This will reduce emissions which are the main cause of global warming. Scientists also believe that global warming will have a devastating effect on the world if heavy reliance on conventional sources is not reduced.”

Sheikh Hamdan further noted that renewable energy costs are increasingly falling and would continue to fall as a result of improvement in production technologies.

"It is because of these concerns that we are organizing the conference on renewable energy in arid zones. Our aim is to explore new technologies and alternative energy resources that are , cost-effective, environment friendly and have the potential of stimulating sustainable development.”

Asked on the UAE resources and plans to introduce renewable energy, Sheikh Hamdan said: "Although the UAE is a major oil and gas producer, yet we have focused in recent years on renewable energy resources so as to provide cost-effective and environment-friendly energy. We are also endowed with clean renewable energy resources. The Ministry of Energy is working on a number of plans and initiatives, including establishment of a research national centre to focus on renewable energy studies. The centre will also liaise with international bodies to work out programmes for production of renewable energy. We have no doubt that we are blessed with alternatives energy sources such as solar energy. The UAE is noted for its sunshine throughout the year.”

Sheikh Hamdan further remarked that when these programmes are ready, the UAE would not be totally new to the field as it has already introduced solar energy in the production of desalinated water. The water desalination plant in Umm Al Nar in Abu Dhabi began studies and introduction of solar energy since 1985, he said. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
