Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has called on UAE nationals and expatriates living in the country to donate generously with all that they can to reach out to the victims of the devastating earthquake and the Tsunami tidal waves that hit a number of South East Asian countries, killing hundreds of thousand people, destroying many properties and displacing millions of people.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Sheikh Hamdan, who is also the Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, said that the RCS, in line with the directives of President H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, had, from the first day of the sad incident, started sending out relief assistance to the affected areas.

"But the tragic rise in the number of victims and the volume of destruction caused by the deadly quake and tidal waves made us to double our efforts to gather more and more donations both in cash and kind," he said, adding that the decision was taken after a review of reports from the RCS's representatives, who visited the affected area to have first hand information about the situation there.

Sheikh Hamdan urged all and sundry, including individuals and institutions, UAE nationals and expatriates, to generously donate to the RCS's special fund opened for the victims of this tragic incident to assist in alleviating their sufferings. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
