Hamdan visits Berlin City Hall

Visiting UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks yesterday with Klaus Wowereit, Governing Mayor of Berlin, over ways of bolstering bilateral cooperation in trade, economy and investment. Wowereit welcomed Sheikh Hamdan and his accompanying delegation to German, saying the visit coincides with a new era for Europe where a number of European countries would join the EU.

Under this era, Berlin will move from the margin to the centre of event, becoming an important seat Europe and the EU. 'Sheikh Hamdan's visit is a landmark event for Berlin and Europe as it will open up the door for new forms of cooperation and interaction with various cultures,' he said in an address on the occasion. 'You represent a community that has been viewed with optimism and is well aware of the opportunity available for international cooperation.

We highly value the civilisational progress your country is enjoying and we share you the concern over instability in the Middle East region,' he told Sheikh Hamdan. 'We are extremely happy that our countries have entered a joint strategic partnership and cooperation in assisting Iraq in the area of security and stability through the training of Iraq police forces,' he added. He expressed his hope that stability would prevail in Iraq as soon as possible. Signing on the opening of the UAE embassy building, Wowereit said the mission premises reflected a qualitative leap in bilateral relations. It is a clear sign from Abu Dhabi to strengthen ties with its partners in Germany.

He named health as the most potential sector for remarkable Growth in the opportunities that would open up in future. Commenting on the Golden Book of the Berlin City Hall, Sheikh Hamdan said he was very happy to be among 'our friends here in Berlin. I would like to thank the official and citizens of Berlin for the warm hospitality accorded to us. We hope such visits would continue so to give more strength to our bilateral official and popular ties.

Later, Sheikh Hamdan, accompanied by Wowereit, proceeded to the Brandenburg Gate, one the famous landmarks of the city. They walked through the Gate to the 18 March Square. Built 130 years ago, the Berlin City Hall is a government and administrative site and an attractive tourist destination. It has a total of 243 rooms for different purposes. The first meeting of the city first council was in 1870. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
