Hanif opens CDR's international conference on UAE History

Minister of Education Dr. Hanif Hassan and Deputy Chairman of the Center for Documentation and Research (CDR) opened yesterday an international conference on UAE history organised by the CDR to mark its 40th anniversary.

Being convened under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs and CDR Chairman, the three-day forum's goal is to offer new perspectives on the history of the UAE based on latest archaeological, historical and academic research.

Eminent national and international archaeologists and historians are participating in the conference which is held under the theme "New Perspectives on Recording UAE History".

Papers covering different aspects of the history of the UAE from the prehistoric period until the establishment of the Federation of the UAE in 1971, will be presented in five panels.

They will cover the "Prehistoric roots of the UAE: from the Stone Age to the Pre-Islamic Period", "The Islamic Period: socio-economic transformations in the Arabian Gulf", "Arrival of the Europeans: Portuguese, Dutch and British eras, "Society and economy in the Emirates during the pre-oil era", and "Emergence of the UAE Federation".

The Center is mobilizing all its resources to seek a better understanding of the Emirates' history since time immemorial.

Following the screening of two documentaries on the CDR evolution and UAE history, Prof. Daniel T. Potts, Professor of Middle Eastern Archaeology at the University of Sydney, Australia, presented a paper on 'Globalization, 'big history' and multi-scalar analysis: Conceptualizing 8000 years of the UAE's cultural development. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
