Houston team in UAE to raise funds for Islamic study centre

An Arab-American delegation has arrived in the UAE to garner support for a college that will teach Arabic and Islamic studies. The three-member team hopes to gain backing from local officials and businessmen for the US$16 million project, as well as the cooperation of educational and charitable foundations.

The Middle East Learning Institute of Houston would be a part of the Houston Community Care Centre (HCCC) and would specialise in Arabic language and culture, as well as religious affairs. The centre is a non-profit establishment run by the Arab community in Houston.

The idea was born when former Houston mayor Lee Brown visited the UAE in October 2002. The mayor's visit, accompanied by a delegation of businessmen, was aimed at boosting relations between Houston and the UAE. The team met their UAE counterparts and signed a Twin Cities agreement between Houston and Abu Dhabi. Fascinated by the UAE's advancement, Brown encouraged the Arab community in Houston to chart an educational exchange programme with the UAE and other Gulf states. (The Gulf News)
