The fact that IDEX is being staged in the United Arab Emirates for the sixth time is a clear indication of the prominent position attained by the UAE under the wise leadership of the President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan said Saeed bin Jabr Al Suweidi, Chairman of the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce of Industry and Deputy Chairman, General Exhibitions Corporation, GEC.

Speaking at a press conference on behalf of Chief of Staff, Lt. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, Al Suweidi said that the fact that this international event is being staged in the United Arab Emirates for the sixth time is a clear indication of the prominent position attained by our country under the wise leadership of the President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Despite the current political tensions which engulf the region, IDEX series is progressing steadily from one edition to the other.

This is a clear indication of the absolute confidence entrusted in the UAE's wise policy and the security and safety the UAE enjoys, he said. He said IDEX series of exhibitions and conferences has already consolidated its position as one of the most important defence events in the world. This is attributed to many factors, the foremost of which is the absolute neutrality and non-alignment of the UAE, thus encouraging exhibitors to display their products and negotiate with their prospective customers without any interference.

The fact that the UAE is not a defence manufacturing country seeking to promote its own national products and its strategic location between East and West are other important factors in that respect, he said. "IDEX 2003 is being staged despite the circumstances prevailing in the region so as to demonstrate that one should continue with efforts to make progress regardless of any obstacle. It should be mentioned that with IDEX series, we are not aiming at profit. Our aim has always been for the show to be an informative medium promoting the UAE both regionally and internationally and consolidating its good relations with various countries of the world,” he said.

He said that IDEX has always attracted global attention, with some 825 companies from 46 countries participating this time, with 37 countries taking national pavilions. Four countries, namely: Malaysia, Romania, Korea and Thailand, are participating in IDEX for the first time. Official invitations have been extended to more than 57 Ministers of Defence, 17 Chiefs of Staff and Commanders of the Armed Forces of brotherly and friendly countries. IDEX's accelerated growth is attributed to many features which are unique to this series. Beside the non-interference in the negotiations between exhibitors / customers by third parties, arrangements are also made for exhibitors to have their customers judge the performance of their armaments by trying them in the field.

Arrangements are also made by the UAE Armed Forces to the exhibitors who request to borrow, free of charge, the Armed Forces' equipment for display in the show. Free transportation is afforded from and to the airport, between hotels and the exhibition site, from the site to the firing range in Maqatra and the naval exhibition at Mina Zayed Port.

Mobility demonstrations on site are considered to be among the most important features of IDEX. Eleven specialised companies are demonstrating the performance of 17 tracked and wheeled vehicles in the show. These companies come from the UK, Jordan, Italy, Belarus, Russia, Czech Republic, Tatarstan, UAE and Singapore. Another feature unique to IDEX is the live firing demonstration at Maqatra firing range. This state-of-the-art facility provides for demonstrating live ammunition and missiles with ranges up to 25 km and more, in an ideal and safe environment.

Twelve companies from South Africa, Croatia, Russia, Austria, USA, Kazakhstan, India, Pakistan and Finland are bringing 20 weapon systems for these live demonstrations. The dedicated berthing area at Mina Zayed Port will serve for naval demonstrations by 12 major warships, including destroyers, aircraft carriers, frigates, submarines and other naval vessels of various sizes. These warships are coming from Italy, India, the Netherlands, Pakistan, UK and France. IDEX 2003 is accompanied, as usual, by the Gulf Defence Conference which has achieved great success since its first edition.

The Conference will address many of the defence issues which concern decision makers in the Arab world. As for the media coverage, invitations have been extended to more than 600 local and international media establishments to provide coverage for all exhibition and conference activities. He extended his sincere gratitude and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, for his continued patronage and support for IDEX since its first edition.

He also praised the support of General Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Minister of Defence and to Lt. General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces and Chairman, GEC, for their continued support of IDEX. The success of IDEX is a clear indication of the success of the exhibition industry in this country, and this in turn is a good reflection of the progress and development achieved by the UAE under the wise leadership of the President, His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers, Members of the Supreme Council, Rulers of the Emirates, he added.
