Greater international participation with more countries making their debut coupled with new features and almost 100 per cent space booked, the fifth International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX 2001) promises to be a bigger and better exhibition, organisers said yesterday. At this year's IDEX (March 18-22) the defence conference MILCON that runs along IDEX will be replaced by the Gulf Defence Conference which will have as its theme "Countering the threats — the GCC countries and their defence policies." Sultan O.B. Al Suwaidi, director-general of General Exhibitions Corp, organiser of the exhibition, said IDEX 2001 would play a crucial role in the regional defence industry. "Now poised for its fifth session, the show begins this century with a brand new 'defence vision'. This is a far-reaching vision that moves beyond past or existing definitions to embrace new futuristic concepts of defence. The vision is global in its scope and not limited by geo-political boundaries." He said 98 per cent of the indoor exhibition space and over 70 per cent of the outdoor area have been booked.

IDEX 2001 will lure more visitors than the 40,000 who attended the previous show. Suwaidi said IDEX 2001 will have 33 national pavilions compared to 28 last time, and the participation of new countries indicates that the exhibition is growing in importance. The countries making their debut are Poland, Brazil, Slovenia, South Korea, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Vietnam. The largest indoor participations are from UK, France, the U.S. and Germany. The UK occupies the largest indoor area, but France and Russia have booked large outdoor spaces. Participation by Arab countries has also grown significantly. The Gulf Defence Conference (GDC), to be held on March 19 and 20 enters the new century with its academic forum on defence strategies and technologies, he said. "It promises to be an intensive, action-packed time of presentations, debates and discussions." The earlier conference, MILCON, was more technical in nature. The GDC will focus on defence policies, he added. (The Gulf News)
