The International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX), which kicks off here tomorrow, is considered by the French defence industries as one of the most important defence exhibitions in the world, a French Embassy spokesman in Abu Dhabi said today. The spokesman added that owing to this importance, particularly in terms of the regional market, French Land Defence and Naval industries have been chosen to participate in IDEX 2003 exhibition at unprecedented level. The French official delegation to IDEX will be headed by Jean-Francois Thibault, Special Representative of the French Ministry of Defence for military exports.

After his departure, the official delegation will be headed by Lieutenant General Jean-Paul Panie, Director for International relations at the General Delegation for Armament (DGA) of the French Ministry of Defence. The French Land Defence Manufacturers Association (GICAT) will group together along with French companies in the national pavilion at IDEX.

Among the participating companies are GIAT Industries, ALKAN, ARMARIS, CNIM, Defence Conseil International (DCI) DASSAULT Aviation, ECA, MBDA, PANHARD,SAGEM and many others. The spokesman added that France did not come to IDEX only as a seller but also as buyer. For more effectiveness of the French defence procurement process, acquisition of some specific system can find a cost effective solution through local procurement. "For example, the repair and maintenance of French naval ships stationed in the region is done in the UAE harbours, thanks to the contracts signed with local ship building and repair companies” the spokesman said.

He added that a new repair and maintenance contract will be signed during IDEX 2003 between ASDB and the French Embassy, which has been mandated by the French Navy for that purpose. As a way of furthering such initiatives, the French Ministry of Defence is participating at IDEX to see if some products exhibited by UAE firms can fulfil some specific needs of the French Forces. "French technical teams are here to evaluate the potential of the UAE defence industry,” said the spokesman. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
