James Clements, a spokesman for UK Trade and Investment, said yesterday that the International Defence Exhibition, IDEX 2015, is one of the premier security shows in the world, and that it has always been strongly supported by the UK since its early beginnings.

Speaking to Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the side-lines of the exhibition, Mr Clements said, "We have been here from the beginning, for about 10 shows. We are represented highly here and we have always supported IDEX very strongly." Clements added that the UK's journey in IDEX has seen it grow and become more successful over the years, leading to richer and more diverse participation from small and large British companies, and SME's.

"I think the number of participants has more than doubled. We have 80 UK companies here this year from the defence and security industry, and a lot of them are seeking partnerships to help build up the Emirati industry and transfer knowledge and skills to Emiratis," he explained.

He added, "IDEX attracts governments and defence companies from all over the world, which makes it a fantastic place to come and exchange ideas." Clements went on to say that this year's show is also timely for addressing and offering all types of defence and security solutions for the region. "It is definitely timelier, more than it's ever been. One of the things that have changed is the security sector, countering terrorism, securing aerospace, and cyber security, all of which are becoming more important in the region," he said.

Participating British companies have diverse offerings in security products, which are not only limited to weapons and armoured vehicles. "It's not all about the ships, the tanks and the planes anymore, it's about a full range of equipment, including those that can be used by the police and emergency services as well," he noted.

"I think that we, with our partners, can demonstrate a very good offering in things like the aerospace and maritime fields. We are a lead nation in the Euro-fighter Typhoon programme which demonstrates our cutting edge skills in designing world class aircrafts, and a growing footprint in cyber space," he concluded. – Emirates News Agency, WAM –
