The Indonesian Embassy in Abu Dhabi celebrated 57 years of its country's independence yesterday with a call for stronger ties with the UAE. Trade and economic relations between the UAE and Indonesia were strengthened in December 1998 when the Agreement on Avoiding Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion were signed, it added.

According to Samsu Rizal, Charge d'Affaires to the UAE, the total volume of trade between the two countries peaked at around US$1 billion during 200-2001, including nearly US$766 million worth of Indonesian exports to the emirates. Rizal said Indonesia will set up a Consulate General in Dubai while the national carrier Garuda Indonesia will reopen its route to the UAE. (The Gulf News)
