Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has reiterated his country's commitment to boost bilateral ties with the UAE in all possible areas of cooperation. In an exclusive statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the Indonesian President, who arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday on official visit to the UAE, praised President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his wise policy citing his support for issues of development, peace and stability in the region.

He said the UAE, under the leadership of Sheikh Khalifa, was among the first to reach out to the Indonesian people, during the time of the disaster that struck the country, to alleviate the sufferings of the people. He cited some of the UAE's landmark assistance to his country as including the Emirates Village, the Sheikh Zayed City in Aceh, which he said is under construction as 469 housing units are being built for those who lost their houses during the tsunami, adding that the Indonesian government deeply believes that the Indonesian people would, for a long time to come, remember those noble humanitarian assistance the UAE gave to them. "It will be a strong bond between the two peoples because it is a symbol of brotherhood and friendship between the two countries," he said.

He pointed out that the UAE and Indonesia are both members of OPEC and would work hard to stabilise oil prices and end the astronomical hike of the prices on the international oil market. He said oil price stability would ensure supply to the market and limit the price fluctuation on the international market.

Touching on the objective of his first official visit to the UAE, President Yodhoyono said Indonesia and the UAE enjoy strong relations, particularly since the founding of the UAE federation in 1971, adding that the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1976 and Indonesia went on to open its consulate in Dubai in 2003. "The major objective of my visit to the UAE is to look for opportunity of joint cooperation in the area of economy, trade and investment for the mutual benefit of our countries.
