Interior Minister issues decree on 90-day entry visa

Interior Minister, Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has issued a ministerial decree calling for the introduction of a 90-day entry visa, renewable for the same period. The new visa is to go side by side with those in existence at present which would undergo a slight amendment.



The decree states that the new visa shall be issued at all the country's points of entry, including land, sea and airports. Another type of visa is to be introduced for issuance to the private sector by the Naturalisation and Residency departments after approval from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.



The new visa, according to the decree, shall allow its holder to work in the country on emergency assignment for a private or public institution on condition that the institution sponsoring the holder of the visa operates within the country in a licensed commercial activity or the sponsor is an official body.



The visa shall be issued to a category of professionals, including engineers, medical doctors, lawyers and technicians who are highly qualified and are coming to the country on a special assignment at the invitation of an official quarters or private institutions operating in the country. This category of visa holders can be accompanied by their wives and children, the decree said, adding that the visa will be issued only after approval is given by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs after all laid-down rules and conditions related to the private sector have been met to safeguard the interest of all parties.



The entry permit, which will allow its holder to stay and work in the country for the period aforementioned period, shall be issued at the cost of Dh600 and be renewed for the same period at the cost of Dh1,200 in accordance with Cabinet Decision No. 16 of 2005.



An official source at the Naturalisation and Residency Headquarters said the reason behind initiating the new visa is to end the abuse of the visit visa, which some people use for working purpose in the country, adding that the new visa is to be issued for emergency assignments.
