Investors need not get labour cards

Investors, whether large or small, will no longer have to obtain a labour card from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The move has been taken to streamline procedures for investors who now only need apply for a residence visa to the Naturalisation and Residency Department, Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Under Secretary of the Ministry for Labour Affairs told Gulf News. Once an investor has the residence visa stamped on his passport and obtains a licence from the Economic Department, he or she can start business immediately."

Dr Al Khazraji said the ministry will only deal with workers' permits. "It is the duty of the Ministry of Economy and Commerce to issue licences to investors and the Residency Department to stamp the visa. "This ministry and the Ministry of Interior has concluded an agreement to this effect. They identified an investor as a person who operates a business whether in partnership with one UAE national or more, or full ownership with a service agent.

"The ministry plans to take measures to curb recruitment of women sponsored by their parents or husbands," Dr Al Khazraji said. "Stiff penalties are considered against husbands and parents who let those on their sponsorship take on jobs without permits from the ministry, as is the case of other sponsors." He explained that a large number of women sponsored by their husbands and fathers are working without permits from the ministry. (The Gulf News)
