Iran lauds UAE stance on improving bilateral relations

Tehran - The Islamic Republic of Iran yesterday lauded the UAE stance on improving bilateral relations between the two countries and welcomed what it described as "the positive role played by the UAE in this regard”. In remarks made here today, Iranian Minister of Defence Admiral Ali Shamkhani expressed his country's readiness for any constructive cooperation with the UAE within the framework of friendship. He described such a friendship as necessary for resolving existing problems.

Admiral Shamkhani pointed out that Iran has not set a limit to its dialogue with the UAE on the issue of the three Islands of Abu Musa, Greater and Lesser Tunbs, saying that the two countries could possibly resolve the current dispute and reached results that are in their best interests. Shamkhani said that the building of confidence between Iran and GCC countries was a necessary prerequisite for political openness with the six-member organisation, adding that Iran does not currently have any new missile programme. "Efforts are currently underway to boost the capability of Shihab-3 missile which was tested earlier”, he told reporters.

Asked about whether his recent visit to Kuwait was aimed at seeking assurances from Kuwait that it would not grant military bases to the U.S, Shamkhani said that GCC countries were not ready to play such a role, particularly in the wake of the policy of political openness adopted by the government of President Mohammed Khatami. This policy, added Shamkhani, has changed security calculations in the region. Shamkhani accused the US of not interested in restoring peace and stability in the region, adding that the countries of the region have now sensed the good-will of Iran and do not see her as posing a threat to them.
