The Iranian embassy yesterday appealed for urgent rescue equipment and relief goods for thousands of people left homeless following Friday's devastating earthquake. Ali Reza Salari, Iranian Ambassador, offering his condolences and sympathies to the affected people of Iran's ancient city of Bam, said there is an urgent need for volunteers and life-saving machines to rescue people who could still be alive under debris.

He, therefore, also asked for immediate donation of power generators, necessary electricity equipment to help volunteers search for survivors, and hydro-electric cutters. The embassy in Abu Dhabi and Iranian Hospital in Dubai will collect the donations. The embassy has also requested private and government hospitals in the UAE to provide volunteer medical staff, life-saving drugs and machines. According to the embassy, the government and private establishments, welfare organisations and individuals can also offer cash donations. (The Gulf News)
