Iraqi Premier drums up support for reconciliation effort

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki yesterday urged Arab countries to stand by Iraq and help it to achieve peace and security. During a meeting with Arab Ambassadors here this evening, the visiting Iraqi Prime Minister singled out terrorism as the main challenge facing Iraqis today.

He outlined the new initiative for national reconciliation in Iraq which is based on non-discrimination on communal, political or ethnic, as well as opening doors for all to join the political process, "except those whose hands are stained with blood of innocent Iraqis and those who have direct connections with terrorism." Al Maliki said that his current Gulf tour to Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait would not be followed by other tours to continue consultations.

"This tour carries no secret agenda to Arab leaders but a clear description of the situation in Iraq," he told Arab ambassadors. "I want to assure you that Iraq is in safe hands. The violence and terrorism will inevitably end because the Iraqis are keen to drive out those who commit such coward acts," he added. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
