Iraqis seek international backing at "International Compact with Iraq" in Abu Dhabi

"The International Compact for Iraq" (ICI), a five-year plan aimed at bringing peace and development to the war-hit country, was held yesterday at Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi city.



UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and French counterpart Philippe Douste-Blazy attended the opening ceremony of the one-day gathering which brought together senior officials from the U.S., Europe, Japan, Korea and Iraq's Arab neighbouring countries along with representatives of the United Nations Organization, World Bank and International Monetary Fund and top Iraqi officials.



Also attending form the UAE were Minister of Economy Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi and Minister of State for Financial and Industry Affairs Dr. Khalfan bin Kharbash. The UAE's speech was delivered by Dr. Kharbash on behalf of Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan.



Dr. Kharbash said the holding the meeting in Abu Dhabi is further proof to the UAE government's keen interest in providing constant support to Iraq.



"This meeting shows international community's interest in Iraq and it would contribute to the process of bringing stability and security to this country", he added.



Present at the meeting were U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch-Brown U.S Ambassador to Iraq Zalmai Khalilzad, U.S Ambassador to the UAE Michele J. Sison, President George W. Bush's special envoy on the Compact talks Robert M. Kimmitt Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and the British Exchequer and a number of Ambassadors to the UAE. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
